Tooth pain can come on suddenly and be incredibly uncomfortable, especially if you’re waiting for an emergency dental appointment. While these steps won’t fix the underlying problem, they can help manage discomfort and keep your symptoms under control until you’re seen by a dentist.
1. Take over-the-counter pain relief
Paracetamol or ibuprofen (if suitable for you) can help reduce inflammation and ease pain. Always follow the recommended dosage on the packaging, and check with a pharmacist if you’re unsure which option is right for you.
2. Rinse with warm salt water
Gently rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can soothe irritated gums and keep the area clean. This is particularly helpful if there is swelling or food trapped around the affected tooth.
3. Apply a cold compress
Placing a cold compress against the outside of your cheek for short periods can help reduce swelling and numb the area slightly. Avoid applying heat to your face, as this can sometimes make swelling worse.
4. Avoid trigger foods and drinks
Try to steer clear of anything very hot, cold, sugary, or hard, as these can worsen sensitivity and pain. Eating on the opposite side of your mouth can also help reduce pressure on the affected tooth.
5. Keep your head elevated
Propping your head up — especially when lying down at night — can help reduce throbbing pain by limiting blood pressure to the area. Many patients find this particularly useful for managing discomfort overnight.
6. Maintain gentle oral hygiene
Continue to brush carefully and keep the area as clean as possible. Maintaining good oral hygiene helps prevent further irritation and reduces the risk of infection worsening while you wait for your appointment.
Important reminder
If your pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by swelling, this may indicate an infection or damage that requires urgent dental treatment. The measures above are temporary and will not resolve the underlying cause of your pain.
